How to Stay Young

clip_image001
Throw out nonessential numbers.

This includes age, weight and height.
Let the doctors worry about them.

That is why you pay them.

clip_image002

Keep only cheerful friends.
The grouches pull you down.

(keep this In mind if you are one of those grouches)

Keep learning:
Learn more about the computer,

crafts, gardening, whatever.

Never let the brain get idle.
"An idle mind is the devil's workshop."
And the devil's name is Alzheimer's!

Enjoy the simple things.

Laugh often, long and loud.

Laugh until you gasp for breath.
And if you have a friend who makes you laugh,

spend lots and  Lots of time with HIM/HER.

The tears happen:
Endure, grieve, and move on.

The only person who is with us our entire life,

is ourselves.  LIVE while you are alive.

Surround yourself with what you love:
Whether it's family, pets, keepsakes,

music, plants, hobbies, whatever.

Your home is your refuge.

Cherish your health:
If it is good, preserve it.
If it is unstable, improve it.
If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

Don't take guilt trips.
Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county,

to a foreign country, but NOT to where the guilt is.

Tell the people you love that you love them,

at every opportunity.

For Better, For Worse. In Sickness and In Health

ATT00345

It was a busy morning, about 8:30, when an elderly gentleman in his 80's arrived to have stitches removed from his thumb. He said he was in a hurry as he had an appointment at 9:00 am. I took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone would to able to see him.

I saw him looking at his watch and decided, since I was not busy with another patient, I would evaluate his wound. On exam, it was well healed, so I talked to one of the doctors, got the needed supplies to remove his sutures and redress his wound.

While taking care of his wound, I asked him if he had another doctor's appointment this morning, as he was in such a hurry.
The gentleman told me no, that he
needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife. I inquired as to her health.

ATT00347
He told me that she had been there for a while and that she was a victim of Alzheimer's Disease.

As we talked, I asked,'Will she be upset if you're late?' He replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not recognized him in five years now.

ATT00349

Surprised, I asked, 'And you still go every morning, even though she doesn't know who you are?'

He smiled as he patted my hand and said, 'She doesn't know who I am, but I still know who she is!'

ATT00351

I had to hold back tears as he left. I had goose bumps on my arm, and thought, 'That is the kind of love I want in my life.'

ATT00353
Loving 'for better or for worse' means being committed to each other in every season and circumstance of life. True love is neither physical, nor romantic. True love is an acceptance of all that is, has been, will be, and will not be.

The happiest people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything they have.

ATT00355
'Life isn't about how to survive the storm,

But how to dance in the rain.'

We are all getting Older. Tomorrow may be our turn.

Will I Live To See 80?

A lady just turned 68, and recently picked a new primary care physician. After two visits and exhaustive lab tests, he said she was doing "fairly well" for her age. A little concerned about that comment, she couldn't resist asking him, "Do you think I'll live to see 80?"

He asked, "Do you smoke tobacco, or drink beer or wine?"

"Oh no" she replied; "I'm not doing drugs, either!"

Then he asked, "Do you eat rib-eye steaks and barbecued ribs?"

She said, "Not much... my former doctor said that red meat is very unhealthy!"

"Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, or do you like playing golf, sailing, hiking, or bicycling?"

"No, I don't" she said.

He asked, "Do you gamble, or have a lot of sex?"

"No" she said.

He looked at her and said... "Then, why do you even give a shit?"
